The difference between backing up and archiving data – and why it matters to your customers

As your customers’ businesses continue to grow and accrue new data, they must also address the need for long-term storage that’s secure and efficient. Many organizations will look to backup certain files, but it’s important to note that backups are ideally used to address short-term (less than 90 day) needs. Backups provide copies of data files in the event of system failures and disasters. Most systems create multiple copies of files, eventually loading the system with multiple copies of the same files.

Archiving, on the other hand, takes inactive or less frequently accessed data and moves it to a more cost-effective storage device for long-term retention. By offloading data from the backup system, your customers can free up storage resources and shorten backup windows.

If you’re looking for long-term storage of large data sets, archiving can be a much better option.

Data archiving reduces storage needs by taking data no longer accessed in everyday business processes, removing it from the database, and writing it to archive files. Later, the archive files can be moved to less expensive media.

If initiated during migrations/upgrades and performed regularly, data archiving can have dramatic effects on controlling the growth of a company’s data storage and consequently lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its systems. In addition to space related considerations, companies often look to their archiving projects for improving system performance.
